UK Punk Sub-genres
Heart of the City: Proto Punk and Novelty Punk
These graphic panels group together examples of seven-inch single picture sleeves in typologies loosely based on punk sub-genre. Clusters reflect the early UK punk scene, the evolution of what would come to be termed new wave, the punk ‘diaspora’ of lesser-known bands taking up the challenge in 1977-78, do-it-yourself and the post-punk avant-garde, the transition across punk generations from the first to second wave, Oi! and street punk and 1980s UK hardcore and anarcho-punk. A collection of picture sleeves by US punk pioneers from the Ramones to Black Flag and Dead Kennedys was later produced for the Punk Rock!! So What? exhibition in Birmingham in 2015.
